|
Abrasions are minor skin wounds in which the skin's surface is worn or torn by rubbing or scraping. Abrasions may hurt more than cuts, but they heal more quickly. Abrasions may be treated by antiseptics or antibiotics. Antiseptics prevent infection by inhibiting the growth of disease-causing microorganisms. Hydrogen peroxide and alcohol are common OTC antiseptics. Red, swollen skin around abrasions is a sign of infection. If these signs are present, use a topical antibiotic ointment such as bacitracin or neomycin. Astringents benefit weeping abrasions by cooling and promoting drying. Biro-Sol Antiseptic, Domeboro Astringent Solution, Witch Hazel, Ammens Medicated Powder, Desitin, and Gold Bond Medicated are common OTC astringents products. |
