Seborrhea

Seborrhea is caused by excess oil secretion by the sebaceous glands. The condition predisposes to acne and frequently appears at puberty. It is seen mostly on the face and scalp.

Medicated shampoos are primary OTC treatments for seborrhea. One class of shampoos (cytostatic agents) work by slowing the rate at which the scalp sheds its surface skin cells. Shampoos in this category are Head & Shoulders 2-in-1, Selsun Blue, and X-Seb Plus.

Coal tar shampoos are believed to function in a manner similar to cytostatic agents. Denorex Medicated Shampoo, Tegrin, MG217, Pentrax, and Tegrin are coal tar shampoos.

Kerolytic agents treat seborrhea by loosening the scales of dandruff so they are shed in smaller particles. These agents are most effective when the scales appear over a limited area. Ionil, Scalpicin, Sebucare, and Sebulex contains keratolytic agents.

Bath products that help moisturize the skin may also be of value. Bath oil products such as Alpha Keri, Calgon, and Nutraderm and oatmeal products such as Aveeno Bath Treatment Moisturizing Formula and Nutra Soothe Oatmeal are commonly available OTC preparations.

Emollients may be of some value in treating seborrhea because they moisturize and soften the skin. Common emollient ingredients are petroleum jelly, mineral oil, dimethicone, and vegetable oils.
