Bee Sting

Depending on the victim's sensitivity, the reaction to the sting of a bee, wasp, or yellow jacket may vary from a small area of redness that swells and itches to a life-threatening allergic reaction. You can treat minor reactions with OTC products. A severe reaction requires emergency medical treatment.

The FDA recognizes ammonia as effective in neutralizing the effect of bee sting. Apply it directly to the site of the sting. After-Bite is an ammonia-containing OTC product intended for bee sting.

Local anesthetics such as Americaine First Aid, Aveeno Anti Itch, Caladryl, Chiggerex, Itch-X, Solarcaine, and Sting Kill are nonspecific remedies for the pain and itch of bee stings.

Antihistamines such as Benadryl and Caladryl, applied to the sting, may bring relief by interfering with the allergic reaction.

Counterirritants such as Aveeno Anti-Itch Cream, Rhuli, and Sting Kill may distract from bee sting pain by creating a feeling of warmth milder than the pain.

Hydrocortisone cream, an anti-inflammatory agent, may relieve pain and itching when applied to the sting.
