Sunburn

Sunburn is the injury that occurs when skin is overexposed to the sun's ultraviolet (UV) rays. Sunburn may vary in severity from reddening of the skin to the formation of fluid-filled blisters.

Sunburn generally heals in about one week. Continual overexposure to the sun is associated with skin cancer. People with red hair or light skin are more susceptible to sunburn than others. The use of sunscreen prior to exposure to the sun helps prevent sunburn.

Sunscreens protect the skin from damage by blocking the sun's UV rays. Sunscreens are graded according to their Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating. The higher the rating, the greater the protection. To minimize the danger of sun exposure, people should wear a sunscreen with an SPF factor of 15 or more. Topical anesthetics may relieve sunburn pain. Two commonly used local anesthetics are benzocaine and lidocaine. Medicated First Aid Burn, Solarcaine Medicated First Aid, Bactine First Aid, Burnamycin, and Sunchaser are OTC local anesthetics.
