Tartar

Tartar, caused primarily by improper dental hygiene, is the hard chalky substance that forms on the surface of teeth. A combination of plaque and saliva creates tartar, which can lead to gum disease and tooth loss.

OTC toothpastes are considered ineffective in removing existing tartar formations. However, the American Dental Association has endorsed several as effective in preventing the formation of new tartar: Aquafresh Gumcare, Close-Up Anti-Plaque, Colgate Tartar Control, Cool Mint Listerine, Crest Gum Care, and Viadent.

To remove existing tartar, have your teeth professionally cleaned by a dentist or dental hygienist.

Antiplaque mouthwashes such as Listerine, Viadent, Plax, Scope, and Cepacol have some antimicrobial activity. They also contain ingredients that loosen plaque, making it easier to remove. These mouthwashes are not an acceptable substitute for toothbrushing, flossing, and regular dental appointments.
