Vaginitis

A vaginal inflammation, vaginitis may be caused by an infection of parasitic, fungal, or bacterial origin. Vaginitis is sexually transmitted. Before attempting OTC treatment of vaginitis, the cause should be identified by a physician.

Vaginitis caused by fungal infection may be treated with OTC antifungal agents. Three OTC compounds for treating fungal infections of the vagina (candidiasis) are butoconazole (Femstat 3), clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin, Mycelex), and miconazole (Monistat).

Vaginal antipruritics may help relieve the itch of vaginitis. These products, including Vagisil, Yeast-Gard, Cortef Feminine Itch Cream, Gynecort, and Vaginex, contain either benzocaine or hydrocortisone.
