Wrinkles are folds in the skin that occur with aging as the result of decreased oil production. Smoking and overexposure to the sun may cause early wrinkling. Sunscreens protect the skin from damage by blocking the sun's UV rays. Sunscreens are graded according to their Sun Protection Factor (SPF) rating. The higher the rating, the greater the protection. To minimize the danger of sun exposure, people should wear a sunscreen with an SPF factor of 15 or more. Emollients may retard wrinkling by adding oil to the skin's surface. Petroleum jelly, mineral oil, dimethicone, and vegetable oils are effective active ingredients of OTC emollients. Water dilutes the effectiveness of bath oils. They may, however, leave the skin with a lubricated feeling. |
