Bronchitis is the inflammation and swelling of air passages beyond the windpipe. It causes coughing, mucus production, and difficult breathing. It may be caused by viral or bacterial infection, prolonged use of cigarettes, or air pollution. If the condition is chronic, OTC bronchodilators are of no value. If this type of cough is excessively bothersome or is preventing sleep, you may want to suppress it with an OTC cough medicine that contains either dextromethorphan or codeine as its active ingredient. |
