Bronchitis

Bronchitis is the inflammation and swelling of air passages beyond the windpipe. It causes coughing, mucus production, and difficult breathing. It may be caused by viral or bacterial infection, prolonged use of cigarettes, or air pollution.

If the condition is chronic, OTC bronchodilators are of no value.

If bronchitis is not chronic, OTC bronchodilators with the active ingredients epinepherine and ephedrine provide relief by relaxing the muscles surrounding the bronchioles, thus allowing the air pathway to widen. These medications are usually delivered through inhalers.

Asthma Nefrin, Bronitin Mist, Bronkaid Mist, Primatine Mist, Bronkaid, and Bronkolixer are OTC bronchitis remedies.

If you have a cough that is eliminating phlegm (productive cough), you may not wish to suppress it. If this type of cough is excessively bothersome or is preventing sleep, you may want to suppress it with an OTC cough medicine that contains either dextromethorphan or codeine as its active ingredient.
