Chicken Pox

Chicken pox is a relatively mild, highly contagious disease caused by a virus and spread through the air. Chicken pox usually shows up 11-18 days after exposure. The first symptom is a fever, followed by a red pimple-like rash that spreads over the face, trunk, and arms. The rash eventually turns into scabs that drop off.

There is no cure for chicken pox, which runs about a 12-day course. Itching is the primary symptom.

Several OTC products provide relief from chicken pox symptoms. Local anesthetics (anti-itching) such as lidocaine and benzocaine may alleviate itching. Caladryl lotion may be of value because its astringent action cools and helps dry the scabs.

Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine may be of particular value if taken at night. They will relieve itching and induce drowsiness.

Soothing collodial oatmeal baths are thought to provide an anti-inflammatory effect.
