A cold sore, a skin inflammation caused by the herpes simplex virus, is characterized by patches of small painful blisters. They commonly appear on the mouth, lips, and nose. The herpes virus can lied dormant in nerve cells lifelong. Stress, strain, fever, or sun exposure can cause the dormant herpes virus to manifest a cold sore. Cold sores can be transmitted by contact with someone who has the infection. OTC cold sore products relieve the pain and protect the sore from further irritation. Benzocaine, a local anesthetic, is the active ingredient in most cold sore medications. Anbesol, Orajel, Tanac, and Zilactin are common OTC products for relieving cold sore pain. Skin protectants such as Herpecin-L and Probax relieve dryness and keep cold sores soft while they heal. |
