An allergy is an immune reaction in which an individual becomes hypersensitive to a foreign substance (allergen) such as pollens, mold spores, or dust. When allergens come in contact with certain cells in the body, the cells secrete a substance called histamine. Histamine is an irritant that causes tears, sneezing, and itching. Antihistamines block histamine and thus relieve these symptoms. Diphenhydramine, clemastine, chlorpheniramine, brompheniramine, and triprolidine are commonly used antihistamines. The most common side effect of antihistamines is drowsiness. When taking antihistamines for the first time, avoid driving and operating machinery until you see how you are going to react. Topical decongestants reduce nasal congestion by decreasing the flow of blood to the nose. Oxymetazoline, phenylepherine, xylometazoline, and naphazoline are commonly used topical decongestants. Afrin, Dristan, Vicks Sinex, and Otrivin are OTC nasal decongestants. |
