Cough

Coughing, a violent form of exhalation, may be either productive or nonproductive. A productive cough expels irritant matter from the respiratory tract, bringing up phlegm or mucous; a nonproductive cough is dry. A cough may be secondary to a condition such as a cold or it may be caused by an external irritant such as smoke.

If you have a dry (nonproductive) cough, you may want to suppress it with an antitussive. Effective OTC cough medicines should contain either dextromethorphan or codeine.

If you have a cough that is eliminating phlegm (productive cough), you may not wish to suppress it. If this type of cough is excessively bothersome or is preventing sleep, you may want to suppress it with one of the antitussive ingredients mentioned above.
