|
A cut is a skin wound caused by slicing with a sharp object, such as a knife. Deep, large cuts with significant loss of blood require emergency care. After cleaning, cuts may be treated by antiseptics or antibiotics. Antiseptics prevent infection by inhibiting the growth of disease causing microorganisms. Hydrogen peroxide and alcohol are common antiseptics. Red skin around a cut is a sign of infection. If present, apply a topical antibiotic ointment such as bacitracin or neomycin. Cuts heal faster when they are closed. Covering cuts with a bandage speeds healing and helps prevent infection. |
