Arthritis

Arthritis is the inflammation of one or more joints. Swelling, warmth, redness, pain, and restricted motion are common characteristics of arthritis. Hundreds of diseases may cause arthritis; the three most common are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.

Osteoarthritis usually affects one or two joints at a time. It is the result of cartilage breakdown in a joint, which, in turn, results from overuse of the joint.

Rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune disease, manifests as inflammation of the lining of the joints. It may affect many joints simultaneously.

Gout, which usually appears in the feet, is caused by a buildup of uric acid. Prescription medicine can treat acute flair ups of gout and can even prevent gout by stopping the buildup of uric acid.

Two categories of OTC products treat all forms of arthritis: analgesic anti-inflammatories and counterirritants.

Analgesics relieve pain and reduce inflammation. Ibuprofen, naproxen, and aspirin are generic names for commonly used analgesic anti-inflammatories.

Counterirritants work by producing a less severe sensation in the area of pain. This counters the sensation caused by the pain. Oil of wintergreen, camphor, menthol, and capsicum preparations are common counterirritants.
