| Fungal Nail Infection |
|
Fungal infection of the nails is characterized by discolored toenails or fingernails. The nails become thick, dull, and crumbly. This infection may continue indefinitely, leading to the complete destruction of the nail. Fungal toenail infections may be caused by walking barefoot in unsanitary places; they may also be secondary to an athlete's foot infection. OTC fungal nail treatments contain the same active ingredients as preparations used to treat athlete's foot. Tolnaftate and undecylenate acid are commonly used. However, it is very difficult for topical antifungal agents to reach fungal nail infections growing beneath the surface of the nails. A complete cure requires either a prescription medication or surgery. Individuals who do not see improvement from applying an antifungal agent after two weeks should see a doctor. |
