Hay Fever

Hay fever is a seasonal allergic reaction to the pollen which is produced by grasses, plants, and trees. Histamine release is part of the body's reaction to exposure to pollen. Histamine is an irritant which causes runny nose, congestion, sneezing, and watery eyes. Antihistamines alleviate these symptoms by blocking histamine activity.

Diphenhydramine, clemastine, chlorpheniramine, brompheniramine, and triprolidine are commonly used antihistamines. The most common side effect of antihistamines is drowsiness. When taking antihistamines for the first time, avoid driving and operating machinery until you see how you are going to react.

Nasal decongestants reduce nasal congestion by decreasing the flow of blood to the nose. Oxymetazoline, phenylepherine, xylometazoline, and naphazoline are commonly used topical decongestants. Afrin, Dristan, Neosynepherine 12 Hour, Vicks Sinex, and Otrivin are OTC nasal decongestants.
