Lice

Head lice are small insects that live in human hair. Their bites are the cause of the itching that is characteristic of head lice. Lice is not a particularly dangerous disease, but is considered a public health hazard because it can be spread rapidly with casual contact. Lice is commonly spread among school children.

Certain OTC shampoos help kill lice and their eggs. Permethrin and pyrethrum extract are common active ingredients in these shampoos.

It is also necessary to wash combs, hairbrushes, and other items that come in contact with an infected scalp. Wash these items in very hot water and dry them in a dryer. Discard items that can't be washed.
