Muscle Cramps

Painful spasms that usually occur in the legs, muscle cramps occur when muscles contract but do not relax. Lasting anywhere from a few seconds to several hours, these cramps may be caused by mineral imbalance, decreased blood flow, or hyperventilation.

Muscle cramps may be helped by counterirritants such as oil of wintergreen, camphor, menthol, and capsicum preparations. Counterirritants are believed to work by stimulating nerves in the skin that cause blood vessels in the muscle to dilate.

OTC pain relieving anti-inflammatories may be of value if the contraction has been severe enough to cause pain even after cramping has stopped. Ibuprofen and aspirin are OTC products that reduce pain and inflammation.
