Periodontal Disease (Gingivitis)

Gingivitis is the inflammation of gums caused by the formation of plaque on the teeth. The gums become swollen and bleed easily. Elimination of gingivitis requires treatment by a periodontist.

The American Dental Association (ADA) does not accept any OTC dentifrice as therapeutically effective for gingivitis. The ADA has, however, given qualified endorsements to several toothpastes.

Many mouthwashes claim to fight plaque and gingivitis. The ADA has given limited endorsements to Listerine, Cepacol, Viadent, and Plax. The ADA notes that the effectiveness of these products has not been definitively proven.
