Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition characterized by scaly red patches that appear on the elbows, forearms, knees, legs, scalp, and other parts of the body. The condition, thought to be of genetic origin, flares up and recedes periodically.

OTC medicines for psoriasis provide temporary relief from the symptoms but do nothing to cure the condition.

Dry skin is the first sign of psoriasis, so emollients to moisturize dry, cracked skin are usually the remedy. Products containing petroleum jelly, mineral oil, dimethicone, and vegetable oils are commonly used.

When scales appear, kerolytic agents such as Panscol, and Salicylic Acid & Sulfur Soap are the next OTC remedies to use. These agents are intended to remove scales. Choose these when the psoriasis is limited to a small portion of the body.

If the scales spread to cover larger portions of the body, use coal tar preparations. Since these preparations are cosmetically unappealing, their use is usually limited to bedtime application. Examples of OTC Coal Tar preparations are Doak Oil, Lavatar, MG217, Neutrogena T/Derm, Polytar, Psorigel, PsoriNail, and Tegrin.

Hydrocortisone creams may also cause psoriasis to recede. Prolonged use of hydrocortisone cream is not recommended, because the psoriasis returns as soon as you discontinue its use.
