Sift together first 3 ingredients in a heavy non-reactive saucepan. Add milk and egg yolks to mixture. Whisk vigorously over medium high heat. Stir constantly until mixture comes to a boil. Immediately remove from heat. Add butter and vanilla. Stir until butter is incorporated. Cover with plastic wrap, pressing down on pudding to prevent skin from forming. Set pan in cold water to cool.
