Eggplant (U.S.)

Eggplant in the U.S. is the same as aubergine in the U.K. In India and South Africa, eggplant is also called brinjal.

Eggplant, which has origins in ancient Asia, is technically a fruit, though it is usually thought of as a vegetable.

Europeans gave it the name "eggplant" since the types of eggplant that were once common looked like goose eggs. The term aubergine comes from the Arabic "al- badinjan."
