French Toast French toast is made by soaking a piece of bread with an egg-milk-butter mixture and then sautéing it. It is served with syrup and sometimes powdered sugar. The French call this breakfast dish "pain perdu," or lost bread; in the Middle Ages, bread that was close to being stale was made into pain perdu so it would not be thrown out or lost. The English sometimes refer to French toast as "Poor Knights of Windsor." |
