Hot Dog (Frankfurter) The hot dog is called a frankfurter after the city in Germany where it was invented. Because it looked like a dachshund (a breed of dog), it was also called dachshund sausage. Street vendors in America used to call out, "Get your dachshund sausages while they're red hot." A cartoonist once showed them selling real dachshunds, hence the name "hot dogs" or "red hots." A "tube steak" is also a hot dog. |
