Nutraceutical Nutraceutical is a term given to substances that may be considered a food or part of a food and provide medical or health benefits, including the prevention and treatment of disease. In 1994, the U.S. Congress made nutraceuticals an official food supplement category. They defined a nutraceutical as "any substance found in food which helps to maintain the normal function and structure of the body." In Canada, a nutraceutical is defined as "a product isolated or purified from foods that is generally sold in medicinal forms not usually associated with food. A nutraceutical is demonstrated to have a physiological benefit or provide protection against chronic disease." |
