Organic (U.S.) In October 2002, the USDA instituted new rules for the labeling of organic foods, creating a national standard for the first time. To meet the new USDA organic standard: • Farms and food manufacturers must be certified by the government. • Egg, meat, poultry, and dairy products must come from animals not given any antibiotics or growth hormones. • Other foods, such as nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, and coffee, must be grown without the use of pesticides, petroleum-based fertilizers, sewage-sludge-based fertilizers, ionization, or genetic engineering. Foods or food products labeled "100% Organic" must contain all organic ingredients. Their packaging can display the official USDA Organic seal. Foods or food products labeled "Organic" must contain at least 95% organic ingredients. Their packaging can also display the official USDA Organic seal. Foods or food products labeled "Made With Organic" must contain at least 70% organic ingredients. They may not display the organic seal however.
