Carbohydrate

The carbohydrate is a major food group (along with fat and protein). Carbohydrates, or carbs, supply the main source of physical energy and regulate the metabolism of protein and fats.

The carbohydrate is one of a group of compounds -- including the sugars, starches, and gums -- that contain six (or multiples of six) carbon atoms, united with a variable number of hydrogen and oxygen atoms (with the two latter always in proportion as to form water). There are two types of carbohydrates: simple (sugars) or complex (starches).
