Romaine Lettuce

About Also called Cos lettuce, Romaine lettuce has an elongated head with darker green outer leaves that lighten to a yellowish color in the center. Crunchy in texture with slightly nutty flavor, it is the preferred lettuce for Caesar salads.

Choosing Look for crisp leaves free of blemishes.

Storage To store any lettuce: First remove any moisture from leaves. Wrap in an airtight plastic bag and store up to five days in the refrigerator.

Cooking Usually eaten raw, romaine can be lightly braised in a samll amount of water and butter.

Nutrition Romaine is a good source of calcium, iron, and vitamins A and C.
